Update Given On Potential Bus Lane On M7/N7 Hard Shoulder

It comes after announcements that the M4 bus priority lane will be operational by the end of Q3 this year

An update has been given on the potential of a bus lane on the M7/N7 hard shoulder.

It comes after announcements that the M4 bus priority lane will be operational by the end of Q3 this year.

Following parliamentary questions by Labour and Kildare South TD Mark Wall, he was told that the proposed implementation of a bus lane on the M7/N7 hard shoulder is currently in the design and options stage.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland has identified that this can be implemented as a bus lane as opposed to a Bus Priority Scheme.

In addition, the draft design for Phase 1 has been reviewed and costed for presentation to the NTA.

Speaking on Kildare Today, Deputy Wall was pleased with the "positive news":

"That is positive news, it's not going to solve the problem but we need everything that can help those sitting in their cars for two or two-and-a-half hours. It's not a silver bullet but hopefully it can make a difference."

"I've spoken to the likes of JJ Kavanagh [bus company] who tell me that it can ease 20 to 25% of the morning traffic from the congestion that's there at the moment."

Meanwhile, Deputy Wall was also told that legislative changes required for the opening of the M4 bus priority lane are now complete.

Bye laws are being drafted to implement the speed limit change required, as well as some "minor works", line marking and road stud installations are also required.

It is expected that the M4 bus priority lane will be operational by the end of Q3 2026.
