The riots occurred near Belfast city centre

Northern Ireland saw a second night of violence overnight, with police coming under sustained attack on the outskirts of Belfast.

Petrol bombs, bricks and bottles were thrown at police in Glengormley, around 15 kilometres north-west of Belfast city centre, last night.

Earlier, around 200 protesters, many wearing balaclavas and face coverings, gathered near a hotel housing about 100 asylum seekers.

As riot police moved in to prevent the crowd reaching the hotel, violence broke out.

A van was set alight and pushed towards police lines, while a nearby derelict building was also torched.

Police responded with water cannon as officers came under sustained attack.

The disorder continued for several hours before the area was finally brought under control shortly after midnight.
