He admits the recent boundary changes to his Cork East constituency caused him to reflect on his political future, admitting the impact of the change to Mallow 'has been profound'.
He served as a junior minister in three Departments during the Fine Gael-Labour government between 2011 and 2016.
He's the second Labour TD to announce they won't be running next time out - after former leader Brendan Howlin announced he was stepping down last Friday.
