The number of prisoners sleeping on floors has quadrupled since January
Almost 200 prisoners are sleeping on the floor in jails across the country.
Almost half of these are in Mountjoy in Dublin.
The country's prisons are now at 104 per cent capacity which is 4,583 inmates
Mountjoy is at 110 per cent capacity with 827 prisoners - 85 of these are sleeping on mattresses on the floor
Nationwide the number of prisoners asleep on the floor has quadrupled since January at 194
Throughout all of last year - the average number on the floor in jails was 39 according to the Irish Times.
The paper says staff have warned of this practice of sleeping on the floor could result in a delay treating inmates who are unresponsive.
