€22 million in funding has been announced for financial and mental health well-being supports to students
€17 million will go towards the Student Assistance Fund, which can be used to help students with costs like books and class materials, rent, food and childcare costs.
€5 million is being provided for mental health funding, which will be used to recruit additional counsellors and Assistant Psychologists.
The money will also be spent on other key personnel and on training and awareness.
€1.3 million of the total is being allocated to Maynooth University.
Fine Gael MEP, Colm Markey, says “It has been an incredibly difficult 18 months for students who made huge sacrifices to protect public health. I have no doubt that the pandemic has hit young people hard and it’s vital they have the supports they need as college life returns to normal. The €275,000 in mental health funding for Maynooth University will go towards student counselling services, staff training and awareness initiatives.
