A student from Timolin has been named a Regional Winner at the 2026 Global Undergraduate Awards (GUA) for her research about sepsis.
It comes as September is Sepsis Awareness Month.
Aibhe Kelly, a student at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), had conducted research into the role of platelets in sepsis, a life-threatening response to infection that remains a major challenge in medicine.
Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency when the body has an extreme harmful reaction to the infection.
She was recognised as producing among the strongest undergraduate medical science work in her part of the world.
Her work contributes to a growing understanding of how the body's own clotting cells shape the course of the condition.
Winners will be celebrated at the GUA Summit and the Thomas Clarkson Gold Medal presentation, taking place in Dublin on 10th November 2026, bringing together the programme's global winners alongside academics, judges and supporters.
To mark Sepsis Awareness Month, Kildare Today spoke to clinical lead of the HSE Sepsis Programme Dr Michael O' Dwyer.
While he stresses that it's important to remember that the majority of infections resolve themselves or with tablet antibiotics, some infections may spread and attack organs and lead to critical illness, adding that early treatment is important from there.
The word SEPSIS is an acronym to aid people in understanding the signs of sepsis and septic shock.
S for Slurred speech or confusion, E for Extreme temperature pain, or fever, P for Passing no urine (all day), S for Skin changes and rashes, I for "I feel like I might die" and S for Shortness of breath.
