An illegal encampment along the cul-de-sac section of Aughaboura in Athy has sparked frustration among local residents, with concerns over noise, safety, and access being raised repeatedly in recent weeks.
Local resident 'Tom', who lives near the encampment, reported the issue to Kildare County Council after experiencing disturbances, including dogs barking and howling throughout the night.
He also said four horses are grazing and trampling newly trees along the embankment.
"It's affecting the whole road," Tom said. "If a fire engine had to come down here, it wouldn't be able to turn around."
Speaking on Kildare Today, Tom said the road is under the council’s jurisdiction.
Labour Cllr Mark Leigh confirmed the encampment has been an ongoing issue for the past six weeks.
He said gardai have informed him that the council needs to issue the final notice before further enforcement can take place.
He believes there is a lack of coordinated action between the relevant authorities.
“There needs to be more joined-up thinking between the Gardaí and the council," Cllr Leigh said.
He said the "current legislation is too vague and lacks the precision needed" to provide clear enforcement powers.
