Over 800 farmers are expected to stage a protest outside Minister of Agriculture Martin Heydon's Constituency Office
Bord Bia has said the occupation of its Dublin headquarters by members of the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) marks the most serious breakdown in relations with a key stakeholder in its 30-year history.
Farmers have been protesting outside the building over the past month, with some maintaining a sit-in inside since February 3rd.
The dispute centres on Bord Bia Chair Larry Murrin and his company’s imports of Brazilian beef — a move farming groups say creates a conflict of interest. They are calling on him to step aside.
Bord Bia says 140 staff are working remotely and that meetings with international customers have been disrupted.
The IFA has proposed a review of board membership rules and quality assurance schemes, and wants Mr Murrin to stand aside during that process.
Kildare South TD and Minister for Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon is not expected to back that demand.
The row is set to escalate on Saturday, when the IFA plans a protest involving tractors and farmers outside Minister Heydon's constituency office in Newbridge from 2:30pm.
In a recent meeting of the IFA at the Clanard Court in Athy, IFA president Francie Gorman cited the location for Saturday's protest with "Newbridge or nowhere".
