ESB says it was an internal error, following a software upgrade on Friday.
ESB Networks has apologised to customers for any 'confusion and concern' caused by a glitch giving out incorrect readings on electricity smart meters.
Hundreds of thousands of people are understood to have been impacted by a malfunction in recent days, which saw some households told they owed thousands of euro for energy usage.
Last week many customers took to social media to reveal the impossible costs on their smart meters.
ESB says it was an internal error, following a software upgrade on Friday.
Speaking this afternoon, Charlie Weston - Personal Finance Editor with the Irish Independent - says 'the network is reviewing the system to ensure it doesn't happen again.'
