Funeral took place in Mount Bolus this morning

Ashling Murphy has been remembered as a kind, talented, loved and admired young woman.

The 23 year-old's funeral took place earlier today in Mount Bolus, Co. Offaly.

The school teacher was murdered as she went for a run on the banks of the Grand Canal in Tullamore last Wednesday.

Schools across the country observed a minutes silence at 11am, as the funeral service began.

A musical instrument, a hurl, GAA jersey, family photo and book to represent her love of teaching were brought to the alter as symbols of her life.

Celebrant & Parish Priest, Fr. Michael Meade told the congregation Ashling's family & boyfriend Ryan were "robbed" of their "most precious gift".

Bishop Tom Deenihan also spoke, highlighting the importance of respecting one another:

Mourners included Ireland's President Michael D. Higgins, his wife Sabina, Taoiseach Micheál Martin & Ministers Helen McEntee, Norma Foley & Catherine Martin.

Ashling's first class pupils from Durrow National School formed a guard of honour outside the church.

Large screens were erected at the local GAA club to cater for the huge crowd of mourners.

Writing on Facebook last night, Ashling's sister Amy posted:

Ashling was laid to rest in Lowertown cemetery.
