35 year-old male musician
A musician has undergone a brain operation while fully conscious and playing the saxophone.
Dr. Christian Brogna, a neurosurgeon and expert in awake surgery, told CBS News preserving the patient's musical ability was essential to him.
Dr. Brogna, says his 35 year-old patient, played the theme song from the 1970 movie "Love Story," and the Italian national anthem, at various times throughout the surgery.
'Awake surgery' helps to lower the risk of damage to functional areas of the brain that could affect vision, movement or speech.
