The British Prime Minister made a statement shortly after 1.30pm, this afternoon, noting her intention to resign as leader of the Conservative Party.
During her short speech, she said the next leadership election for the party would be "completed in the next week".
The 47 year-old noted "given the situation I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.”
Ms. Truss continued by saying the speedy leadership election "will ensure that we remain on a path to deliver our fiscal plan and maintain our country’s economic stability and national security."
She resigns after 44 days in office.
The next shortest premiership, was that of Conservative statesman George Canning, who spent 118 full days as Prime Minister in 1827, before dying in office from ill health.
Ms. Truss would have overtaken this number of days on 3rd January 2023.
The UK's Labour party leader, Keir Starmer, has called for an immediate general election in the wake of Liz Truss’s resignation.
He said the Conservative Party has shown it no longer has a mandate to govern, adding the country needed a new start.
