Wednesday Morning Sports Update

Keeping you up to date on soccer, rugby and swimming.

SOCCER

Republic of Ireland captain Nathan Collins feels they were too 'passive' against Armenia last night.

Evan Ferguson scored the only goal of the game as Ireland ran out 1-nil winners at the Aviva to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.

Collins says he can understand why some fans booed at half-time but he believes they ultimately got a deserved victory.

England are heading to the World Cup next summer - after qualifying with a 5-nil win against Latvia - but they might not be going to Boston.

Donald Trump has suggested again he may take games away from the city, claiming political protests could become a safety concern.

The US president believes he'd have the backing of world football's governing body.

Millie Bright will return to Chelsea action this evening following her England retirement.

She'll captain the side as they look to register their first win of this season's Women's Champions League.

They play Paris FC, who also drew their opening game of the league phase.

RUGBY

Andy Farrell will reveal his Ireland squad for the Autumn Nations rugby internationals this afternoon.

The 18 Irish Lions who played under Farrell in Australia this summer are expected to return.

Joe McCarthy and Caelan Doris are likely to be called up, despite both still recovering from injury.

Ireland open their campaign against New Zealand on the 1st of November, before playing Japan, Australia and South Africa across the month.

Australian rugby league players who sign up for R360 have been warned that they could face a ten-year ban from the sport.

A number of top rugby unions, including the IRFU, have collectively stated that they'll exclude players from international selection should they play in the proposed franchise competition.

The Australian Rugby League Commission have also released a statement this morning, labelling the breakaway project as 'counterfeit'.

SWIMMING

Irish swimmer Shane Ryan admits he's signed up for the Enhanced Games, because the offer was too good to turn down.

The three-time Olympian will compete at the event in Las Vegas next year, where athletes are permitted to use performance enhancing drugs under medical supervision.

Sport Ireland say they're 'deeply disappointed' that European and World medalist Ryan has opted to join the Enhanced Games.
