The government is being urged to stop treating gender balance as an optional extra.

Women for Election is calling for greater balance in the appointment of junior ministers in the coming days.

Of the 15 senior ministers named on Thursday, just three are women - down from four in the previous government.

Katie Deegan, a spokesperson for the campaign group, says a government that doesn't reflect its people cannot fully serve them:
