Tensions Rise In Canary Islands As Residents Demand Tourism Restrictions

Campaigners say they're not against tourists, but are against the effects produced by having too many of them on the islands.

Holidaymakers are reportedly phoning hotels in the Canaries to ask if they'll be safe, ahead of mass protests over tourism.

A group called The Canaries Are Exhausted is planning on staging major demonstrations on April 20th, and are threatening to go on hunger strike if new tourist attractions aren't halted.

The Daily Mail reports residents in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma and Lanzarote have pledged to take part in protests over developments after Tenerife received record numbers of visitors last year.
