State's Consumer Watchdog To Investigate Possible Price Gouging At Petrol Stations

A number of TDs believe that forecourts are profiteering.

The State's consumer watchdog has been asked to investigate whether petrol stations have been price gouging.

A number of TDs have written to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission today after large price hikes yesterday.

Overnight the cut in excise duty of 15 cent on a litre of diesel and 20c on a litre of petrol came into place.

However, with many stations shooting up their prices yesterday a number of TDs believe price gouging was going on.

Sources in Government have admitted the excise intervention, despite costing 320 million euro, may not be nearly enough.

Meanwhile Transport Minister Eamon Ryan has said the Government would like to do more on prices but is restricted by EU regulations.

He's said the Government has made a significant intervention but international prices are still driving increases:
