A Commission of Investigation is being established into the allegations of historical sexual abuse at day and boarding schools run by religious orders.
The Irish Times is reporting there are almost 2,400 allegations at over 300 schools contained in a report provided to government.
Cabinet has agreed to publish the report of a scoping inquiry into the issue.
The development follows allegations of historic abuse at Blackrock College in Dublin.
