100m zones would prevent protests
A new law to introduce 'safe access zones' around abortion services is being debated in the Seanad today.
If passed, the law would prevent demonstrations for 100 metres around any building where abortion or contraceptive services are provided.
Individuals or groups would be banned from showing any opposition, or support, for a person's decision to access abortion services, including through graphics, prayer or counselling.
The proposed penalty for breaching the rules, would be a €3000 fine and, or up to six months in prison.
Labour Senator, Annie Hoey, says the proposed law would protect women accessing essential health services.
"Women should have safe access to termination of pregnancy," she said.
"It will be an offence to protest outside these clinics.
"This sort of legislation is not uncommon around the world.
"It's a basic thing that women should be able to attend appointments without intimidation or harassment.
"People often get in touch with my office, to question why these protests are happening.
"They are often filled with disgust and horror," she said.
