People Will Be Paid €400 A Month To Take In Refugees

File image: Rolling News

The payment would be viewed as expenses.

The Government is finalising plans to pay households €400 per month if they take in refugees from Ukraine.

It comes amid concerns that accommodation options for those fleeing the war will dry up by the end of next week.

The proposal would aim to cover the extra costs, such as increased utility bills, arising in households as a result of hosting refugees, but one senior source said it would also provide an incentive to households to take in people fleeing the war.

Under the plan, households that have already agreed to take in refugees would be able to apply for the payment.

Political Correspondent with the Irish Independent Hugh O'Connell says there are two aims to the plan.
