Over 6,000 Suspected Social Welfare Fraud Cases Uncovered Last Year

Between 2018 and 2023 fraudulent activity was most common in applications of jobseekers' payments, followed by illness benefit and child benefit.

Over 6,000 suspected social welfare fraud cases were discovered last year, up nearly 1,000 on the previous year.

Between 2018 and 2023 fraudulent activity was most common in applications of jobseekers' payments, followed by illness benefit and child benefit.

During that same period, jobseekers' payments accounted for 71 per cent of all suspected fraud cases.

Fine Gael TD James Geoghegan, who brought the issue to the Dáil, says the findings are stark.
