Over 200 Sex-Offenders Are Being Monitored Following Release From Prison

New laws will also allow for additional restrictions on sex-offenders in the community by the end of this year.

Some 218 sex-offenders are being monitored in the community after being released from prison.

The Probation Service says they're among over 1,700 people who are under post-release supervision.

The total figure also includes 121 life-sentence prisoners.

The Department of Justice says judges can insist sex-offenders be supervised when they're released from jail.

Sex-offenders have to tell Gardaí where they live within a week of getting out of prison, and if they move home.

The new laws will also allow for additional restrictions on sex-offenders when they're in the community, and legislation to allow tagging of sex-offenders should be passed by the end of the year.

Minister Helen McEntee says laws to allow greater monitoring of sex-offenders should be enacted by December.
