Online assessments only available for truck & bus licences.

Over 100,000 people are waiting to book a driver theory test but they can't.

The Road Safety Authority says the backlog has built up due to the theory test centres being closed during the Level 5 lockdown.

Online assessments are being offered to drivers looking for a bus or truck license and there are calls for this to be extended to include car license applicants too.

A date has not yet been confirmed for the resumption of the Driver Theory Test Service. As such the service remains suspended until further notice.

Brian Farrell speaks for the Road Safety Authority.

He says they will soon be offering online tests to all applicants but the only meaningful way to clear the backlog is to get the test centres open again..

Brian Farrell says, once test centres are open, capacity will increase to 50,000 tests a month.
