New Legislation Could Give Gardaí Power To Supply Schools, Creches & Colleges With Photographs of Sex Offenders

Those believed to pose risk of reoffending

Gardaí could soon have the power to provide members of the public with photographs of sex offenders, who are believed to pose a risk of reoffending.

If an amendment to current legislation is passed, gardaí will be permitted to share pictures of offenders with schools, colleges and creches.

According to the Irish Independent, it's part new legislation to clamp down on sex-criminals - which also includes electronically tagging.

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties has raised concerns the move may see the public "take justice into their hands" if they identify a convict.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee says pictures will only be shared in specific cases:
