Man Who Flew Cocaine To Ireland From France Jailed For 11 years

He pleaded guilty to possessing drugs worth 13 thousand euro or more and unlawfully importing cocaine in the aircraft.

A man has been jailed for 11 years for smuggling 8.4 million euro worth of cocaine into Ireland.

56-year-old Tim Gilchrist, from Mavis Bank, Newrath, Waterford flew the drugs in through an "open corridor" aerodrome at Abbeysrule in Longford.

After landing, Mr. Gilchrist's car was intercepted at Lough Owel in Westmeath, where 120 kilos of cocaine were found.

He pleaded guilty to possessing drugs worth 13 thousand euro or more and unlawfully importing cocaine in the aircraft.

The headline sentence of 16 years and six months was reduced due to the guilty plea and backdated to when he went into custody.
