A man accused of assaulting a woman canvassing alongside Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald in Dublin has appeared in court.
The alleged incident happened while campaigners for President-elect Catherine Connolly were leafleting in the north inner city.
39-year-old Daniel Soave, of Portland Row, Dublin 1, has been granted bail after appearing before Dublin District Court charged in connection with an alleged assault and public order offences on North Strand Road last Friday.
He was charged under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act and the Public Order Act following an incident that was widely shared online.
The court heard that when he was replying to one of the charges, Mr. Soave said, "What’s that all about? Complete lies, I never pushed anybody".
Judge Derek Cooney set bail at 300 euro, with strict conditions banning contact with witnesses and online posts about the case.
Legal aid was granted after the court heard Mr. Soave is employed, but faces high rent costs.
He’s due back in court on December 15th.
