There have been heated exchanges in the Dáil as TDs debate a motion from the Rural Independents on immigration.

It's the first time this Dáil has formally debated the issue.

The motion states Ireland should "stop those who come to take advantage of our generosity as asylum tourists."

However, it was rejected by some members, who argue the group has been trying to take advantage of the recent riots in Dublin.

Labour's Aodhán Ó Ríordáin says the Rural Independents are using concerns around immigration to secure votes.
