The HSE want's to avoid the "dreadful" situations facilities were left in after the last bank holiday.

Hospital staff are being asked to volunteer for weekend work to avoid the "dreadful" situations facilities were left in after the last bank holiday.

The head of the HSE Bernard Gloster has written to staff asking for them to take on extra shifts next weekend, after over 700 people were waiting for beds the day after the May bank holiday.

However, a retired consultant says bed capacity is the underlying problem.

Dr. Fergal Hickey believes that issue, as well as increased staffing levels, need to be addressed
