The Minister warned that Ireland is now at a "crossroads" in its efforts to eradicate the disease, which has returned to levels last seen in 2003.
Minister for Agriculture and Kildare South TD Martin Heydon has called an emergency meeting of the TB Forum following a sharp rise in TB cases, describing the situation as the most serious setback in more than 20 years.
New figures reveal a 36% increase in herd restrictions over the past two years, with incidence rising from 4.31% in 2022 to 6.04% in 2024.
The Minister warned that Ireland is now at a "crossroads" in its efforts to eradicate the disease, which has returned to levels last seen in 2003.
“An increasing number of farm families are facing the emotional and financial hardship of a TB breakdown,” Heydon said, warning of serious consequences for rural communities and the agri-food sector if urgent action is not taken.
The emergency meeting, scheduled for next Thursday, will bring together key stakeholders.
Minister Heydon is expected to present new proposals for a revised TB eradication plan, developed in collaboration with scientific and veterinary experts.
He also acknowledged the efforts of farmers, vets, and Department staff working on the frontlines of the TB response.
