3 members of the same family have died.

Gardai have launched a criminal investigation into what's believed to be a murder-suicide in North Kerry.

Three members of a family were found dead at a home in the town of Lixnaw on Tuesday night.

Gardai say the family were well respected in the area, and they are yet to establish a motive for the incident.

56-year-old Eileen O'Sullivan and her 24-year-old son Jamie, were found inside the house, while Eileen's 63-year-old partner Mossie was found at the back of the home.

Gardai say the results of the post-mortems will determine the course of their investigation, preliminary findings indicate that all three died of gunshot wounds.

Consultant psychiatrist at the Hermitage Clinic in Dublin, Punchestown resident, Patricia Casey, says she previously called for a national review to be set to into tragedies of this type:

A Kerry-based journalist says locals are still "baffled" by an apparent double murder-suicide that happened in the north of the county.

Anne Lucey says the community are struggling to make sense of what happened
