FFI has lodged the complaint with the EU.

The government's being accused of providing illegal State aid to gas and solid fuel energy providers.

Fuels for Ireland, which represents the likes of Applegreen, Circle K and Maxol, has lodged the complaint with the EU.

The group claims oil-based energy consumers are being left with the sole responsibility of funding the governments Climate Action Fund.

It follows a move by government to redirect all income from a levy aimed at safeguarding oil supplies to the fund.

Fuels for Ireland claims it's unlawful as it puts its members at a competitive disadvantage to users of other energy sources, such as gas and solid fuel.
