Driver Jailed For Fatal Crash After Speeding At Twice The Limit

A young man has been jailed for four years and three months after causing the death of 21-year-old Dylan Killalee Maher in a crash on November 12, 2023.

Cameron Cooper, 23, of Ballyfermot, Dublin, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death, driving without insurance, making a false report, and failing to offer assistance.

He was driving at 120 km/h in a 60 km/h zone when he crashed into the back of a car on the Naas Road near the Red Cow Hotel.

Maher was standing at the back of the car, retrieving his coat, when the crash occurred. He died instantly.

Judge Ronan Munro called Cooper’s speed "unconscionable," especially given the proximity to a nightclub.

Cooper was sentenced to five years and three months, with the final year suspended for five years.

If he breaches traffic laws during that period, he will return to jail.

Cooper was also disqualified from driving for nine years.
