Draft Law On Facial Recognition Technology To Be Published

A draft law on the use of facial recognition technology will be published later.

The move would allow Gardaí to use the technology when analysing CCTV.

Gardaí have wanted to use it for some time as it will speed up their investigations as they won't have to trawl through hundreds of hours of footage.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee has said it would be crucial in investigating serious crime.

Following the riots in Dublin last month, the offences of riot and violent disorder were also included in the proposed legislation.

However privacy concerns continue to be raised by civil liberties groups, and members of the coalition.
