Cases of the invasive Group A Streptococcus disease this year are more than quadruple what was expected, according to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.

The HPSC say symptoms of iGAS include extremely high temperature, muscle aches, redness at a wound, dizziness or a flat red rash.
However, in general, strep throat is a mild disease, but it can be very painful.
Common symptoms may include:
- Fever
- Pain when swallowing
- Sore throat that can start very quickly and may look red
- Red and swollen tonsils
- White patches or streaks of pus on the tonsils
- Tiny, red spots on the roof of the mouth, called petechiae
- Swollen lymph nodes in the front of the neck
