HSE figures reveal between January & May 2022, 25,000 people waited longer than 24 hours for hospital admission via emergency departments.
During the same period in 2021, 8,865 people waited longer than 24 hours - 2,500 were aged over 75.
The figures were released following the issuing of a parliamentary question by Sinn Féin's David Cullinane.
On Friday morning's 'Kildare Today' Dr. Fergal Hickey called the situation "absolutely unacceptable".
Listen back to Dr. Hickey's interview with Eoin Beatty:

Nationally, 397 people were waiting on trolleys throughout Ireland's hospital system that's according to the Irish Nurses & Midwives Organisation's 'Trolley Watch' figures - again a decrease on Thursday's numbers of 69.
