Two people were discharged from the Central Mental Hospital last year after spending an average of 10 years in detention.

41 of the 90 patients in the centre in 2020 had been charged with murder.

About four out of every five people were sent there after being found not guilty of a crime, by reason of insanity.

Consultant psychiatrist, Punchestown resident, Patricia Casey, from the Hermitage Medical Clinic in Dublin, says long periods of detention are often needed.
