A mother says she may be forced to move back to Kilkenny because she can’t find a childcare place near her home in Kilcullen.
Jennifer and her husband bought their house five years ago.
Their child is now one.
Nearly a year on, there’s still no creche place, particularly part-time options.
She said she is now looking at a situation where her child will be minded by family members in Kilkenny for a couple of days per week.
This means Jennifer will commute to Kilkenny and work from a family member's home, for the other half of the week she will work in Dublin.
Her husband does shift-work, meaning the family need a part-time creche place.
Speaking to Kfm, Jennifer said selling her Kilcullen home is something the family have considered - even though they don’t want to.
They have already had the house valued.
She said she is also worried about afterschool options down the line, explaining that parents are "being treated so badly" and that the bonding time with a new baby is overshadowed by the stress of issues like not being able to secure a creche place.
Kildare South Labour TD Mark Wall said he had a phone call with Minister for Children Norma Foley last Friday.
The Minister signalled that she is willing to help in areas with no creche. But a site and provider must now be identified.
Deputy Wall said it is a retrospective move given the area’s growing population.
