Most recent reform, Forsa says, took place without much debate.

A trade union is called for reform of local government to bring it closer to the communities it representions.

30,000 people working in city and county councils across Ireland are members of Forsa.

The union says the most recent reform, which included abolition of town councils and creation of municipal districts, took place with little public debate.

And, it says, all Mayors in Ireland should be directly elected.

Peter Nolan is National Secretary of Forsa.

Speaking to Kildare Today, he says a range of reforms are needed.

Peter Nolan joined Eoin Beatty on Thursday's edition of the programme.
