Ukrainian Residents Protest Over Pending Evictions From Accommodation Near Castledermot

Fire safety concerns were raised in mid-December, however the 170 residents secured an extension on their stay until January 31st.

Ukrainian residents are protesting outside Carlow County Council this afternoon, calling for an extension on their stay at a former restaurant just outside Castledermot.

The former Toughers Restaurant was converted to accommodation in 2022.

Fire safety concerns were raised in mid-December, however the 170 residents secured an extension on their stay until January 31st.

Olha Chorna has been a resident there since it opened - she says they only had one month's notice to find alternative accommodation.

Cllr Vera Louise Behan recently told Kfm that she believes residents are being moved out not because of safety concerns but simply because of a "contract ending".

She has described the situation as "inhumane", arguing that children living on the Toughers site are settled in a school in Levitstown.
