Reports that a number of business premises closed in Newbridge in the wake of the death of a member of the travelling community have been described as "blatant discrimination".
Kfm understands that a number of premises closed their doors as members of the community mourned the death of Jerry Maloney, who died when the pick-up truck he was a passenger in crashed on the Barrettstown Road in Newbridge shortly after 8pm on Thursday, June 5.
Sinn Fein representative for Newbridge James Stokes said the travelling community "deserves respect".
Kfm understands that a bouncer in one pub that closed was assaulted on Sunday night.
However, there is no suggestion that the act was carried out by a member of the Maloney family.
Mr Stokes said if a "Kildare man did something wrong the pubs don't close down for all the Kildare people".
He said it is "discrimination plain and simple".
