Speaking to Kfm today, Vincent Gardiner, Evan's father - who is also undergoing cancer treatment himself - said Evan arrived at Crumlin Hospital on Thursday.
A teenage boy from Celbridge who waited more than three years for vital surgery has now undergone his first operation and is in recovery.
15-year-old Evan Gardiner, who has Down Syndrome, had pins inserted in his knees during the procedure.
Speaking to Kfm today, Vincent Gardiner, Evan's father - who is undergoing cancer treatment himself - said Evan arrived at Crumlin Hospital on Thursday.
He got the all clear following an ECG and surgery began the following morning at 9.20am.
The surgery lasted over 8 hours.
Evan had two two pins inserted into his knees and his leg was realigned.
His family say they are relieved Evan is out the other end of his first procedure, but warn there’s still a long road to recovery.
Four more surgeries will have to be carried out.
Mr Gardiner told Kfm that his son had suffered repeated falls as his ankles turned in and his kneecaps began to dislocate.
Doctors had previously warned that without surgery, Evan could end up in a wheelchair.
His operations were repeatedly scheduled and cancelled in recent years, leaving his family under immense strain.
Kfm reported last week how Evan was suffering as a result of not having surgery.
