Expense of living in areas, like Kildare, also problematic
A severe shortage of teachers has led to schools hiring more than 14,000 unqualified people.
That's according to new Freedom of Information figures, released to Newstalk.
A survey carried out by the Teachers Union of Ireland found that 91% of secondary schools reported difficulties in recruiting teachers in the past 6 months.
Principals & Deputy Principals were surveyed in 94 second-level schools.
In the previous 6 months, 61% of those schools had experienced teacher retention difficulties.
Additionally, 61% of the schools surveyed currently have unfilled posts.
On Wednesday afternoon, General Secretary of the TUI, Michael Gillespie, spoke to 'Kildare Focus'.
He noted the lack of full-our contracts & the restoration of promotional opportunities, have led to a recruitment & retention crisis.
Mr. Gillespie added issues like fuel prices & the expense of both renting & buying in certain areas of the country - including Kildare - has not helped to ease the problem:
