Sallins Woman Says Baby Could Have Survived With Proper Care At Portlaoise Hospital

She criticised the hospital's treatment and said her baby’s organs, including his brain, left lung and intestines, were retained after a postmortem despite her and her partner’s objections.

A Sallins woman told an inquest she believed her stillborn son would have survived with proper care at Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise.

Chelsea Brereton, from Sallins, said she left the hospital "broken, confused, and consumed with grief" on April 15, 2020, after learning her baby, Mason, had died in the womb.

He was delivered stillborn the next day.

She criticised the hospital's treatment and said her baby’s organs, including his brain, left lung and intestines, were retained after a postmortem despite her and her partner’s objections.

The inquest, according to Breakingnews.ie, heard she was discharged in pain five days before learning of her son’s death, after requesting labour induction.

Pathologist John Gillan said Mason died from lack of oxygen due to hyper-coiling of a short umbilical cord, likely within 48 hours before the foetal heartbeat was detected as absent.

Chelsea will share her story on Monday morning's Kildare Today show.
