Rathangan Resident And Father Dies In Workplace Accident

His family and the wider community have been left devastated by his sudden passing

A family living in Kildare and wider community has been left devastated following the death of a father in his 40s in a workplace accident.

Tributes have been pouring in for the man who died of his injuries in the building site accident in Rathdrum, Co Wicklow, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon at around 3.30p.m.

He has been named locally as John Maher, who was in his late 40s and was living at Kilmoney North in Rathangan but who was originally from Rathevan, Portlaoise, Co Laois.

An Irish Coastguard helicopter was tasked to the building site, but did not land as the man had died from his injuries.

His body was removed to St. Columcille’s Hospital in Loughlinstown where a post mortem examination is due to take place.

Locals said that John was a ‘thorough gentleman and a very hard worker’.

Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) have each launched separate investigations following the accident.

John was a member of Kildare cycling Club.

In an online tribute they wrote “John will be sorely missed by everyone at Kildare Cycling Club and in the wider community. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Tracey, his sons Seán and Fionn, and the wider Maher and Power family."

John will be reposing at his family home (R51 W288) from 2pm on Sunday concluding with prayers at 6pm.

Removal by Glennons Funeral Directors on Monday morning to arrive at The Church of Assumption and St. Patrick, Rathangan for Requiem Mass at 11 o'clock.

Burial afterwards in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Rathangan.

House private on Sunday after conclusion of prayers and on Monday morning please.

Deeply regretted by his wife Tracey, sons Seán and Fionn, parents Pat and Mary, brother Liam, sisters Patricia and Eileen and extended family.
