Protest To Take Place In Newbridge Opposing Modular Homes For Displaced Ukrainians

Local residents in Lakeside Park have said the estate is not suitable for any new homes.

A protest will take place in Newbridge this weekend in opposition to the proposed modular homes for displaced Ukrainians between Lakeside Park and Dara Park.

Mary, a Lakeside resident has told Kfm that the event will take place at the shopping centre at Ballymany on Saturday at 1pm, and that the protestors plan to walk from there to Fine Gael Minister Martin Heydon TD's office.

It follows a meeting of local residents in opposition to the proposed homes which was held last Thursday.

Mary told Kfm that it's her understanding that these modular homes will be built on a "green and tar area" that resident's children play on.

"There's already children in this town on waiting lists for school," said Mary.

"I personally know people who have to bring their children to school in Kilcullen because there are no spaces," she said.

The Lakeside park resident said that people within the estate can't get a doctor, and that Newbridge in general doesn't have the amenities to cope with an influx of people.

She said the estate isn't equipped to take 30 more houses, and that he residents got no consultation about the modular homes.

Mary said there have been issues in regards to sewerage in the estate, which have been ongoing for seven years and still have not been resolved.

"Our problem is not with the Ukrainian people, it is with the Government," she added.
