Plans For Sallins Cafe Blocked By Red Tape As Dereliction Persists, According To Local Cllrs

A derelict building in Sallins

Their remarks come as An Taisce – The National Trust for Ireland – highlighted the issue of vacancy and neglect in parts of Sallins, calling for targeted renovation efforts to help revitalise the village.

An Bord Pleanala is holding up plans by locals to transform derelict properties.

That's according to two local Cllrs: Fianna Fail's Carmel Kelly and Independent Cllr Bill Clear.

Their remarks come as An Taisce – The National Trust for Ireland – highlighted the issue of vacancy and neglect in parts of Sallins, calling for targeted renovation efforts to help revitalise the village.

While the canal-facing terraces are largely well maintained and in active use, concern has been raised about the northern end of the village, particularly the Clane-facing side, where a number of older buildings remain vacant and dilapidated.

An Taisce noted that these unused buildings represent both a challenge and an opportunity for the local community.

The situation in Sallins mirrors similar trends seen in nearby Naas and other rural towns, where parts of historic town centres face underuse despite strong community interest and tourism potential.

Speaking to Kfm, Cllr Carmel Kelly cited one example of efforts to establish a cafe in Sallins but long delays by An Bord Pleanala meant plans were abandoned by the would-be owner.

Cllr Bill Clear said the whole system is designed "to make things much more difficult".
