Pay Boost Proposed To Tackle Air Traffic Controller Shortage At Casement Aerodrome

Tanaiste and Minister for Defence Simon Harris said the boost would include a “service commitment payment” as part of efforts to retain experienced personnel.

Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel, just over the Kildare border, is facing serious staff shortages among air traffic controllers, prompting a proposed pay boost to improve recruitment and retention.

Due to the lack of personnel, the airport’s operating hours have been cut, with no take-offs or landings between 8pm and 8am, even on weekends.

Tanaiste and Minister for Defence Simon Harris said the boost would include a “service commitment payment” as part of efforts to retain experienced personnel.

He said the financial measure would be linked to broader reforms expected within the Defence Forces.

The aerodrome is used by the Defence Forces, Gardaí, foreign military, and for State/VIP flights.

Kfm understands that the Weston Airport in Lucan is currently being used by the Garda Air Support Unit.
