Over €20 Million Was Lost In Revenue On Public Transport Services Last Year Due To Fare Dodgers

Commuters in Kildare are among those affected by high levels of fare evasions on Go-Ahead Ireland bus routes.

Over €20 million was lost in revenue on public transport services last year due to fare dodgers, according to estimates by transport regulatory bodies.

Commuters in Kildare are among those affected by high levels of fare evasions on Go-Ahead Ireland bus routes.

The company has reported a 5.4% fare evasion rate on services connecting Kildare to the greater Dublin area.

The figures that were released by the National Transport Authority (NTA) show that "Go-Ahead Ireland" which operates key commuter routes linking Kildare town, Naas, Newbridge and Athy to the capital is experiencing persistent issues with non-paying passengers.

Go-Ahead Ireland was hit with over €121,000 in penalties by the NTA last year, for failing to meet its fare compliance targets.

Overall, fare evasion cost the operator an estimated €1.3 million in lost revenue.

Public transport users in Kildare are encouraged to carry a valid ticket, as the NTA increases oversight and operators boost their revenue protection efforts in the months ahead.
