Over 20 groups and over 300 volunteers in Kildare helped remove an estimated 1.9 tonnes of marine litter for the Big Beach Clean that took place over the weekend.

This year's initiative by Clean Coasts was the largest clean-up event yet, with over 600 clean-ups being organised by volunteers.

Among Kildare's groups and volunteers, Maynooth Tidy Towns had over 30 volunteers complete a riverbank clean along the Larine and the Canal banks.

The main items found in this clean were alcoholic beverage cans and bottles, filling 5 bags totalling 20kg.

95 tonnes of litter was removed nationwide.
