Kildare senator says a softly-softly approach isn't working.

Sanctions should be considered if businesses don't adhere to a proposal for female representation on corporate boards.

The National Women's Council wants to see a law introduced setting a 40 per cent gender quota target.

According to new research, women are significantly underrepresented in senior leadership roles and in boardrooms of Irish companies.
