The need for additional funding for the Meals on Wheels service in Kildare South has been raised in the Seanad this morning by Senator Mark Wall.
The Meals on Wheels service in Kildare consists of nutritious meals, friendly visits, and safety checks to older and vulnerable people in the county.
It is delivered through the 70 HSE services and 247 community providers, and provides approximately 239,000 meals to 19,000 clients monthly.
It has been highlighted that further investment and resources for the service is needed in Kildare South and surrounding areas.
Many families have raised the issue of a person being released from hospital, or suffering a bereavement, and are in need of assistance of the service.
Minister for State Mary Butler stated she had increased funding for the Meals On Wheels service from €3.5 million in 2022 to €6.25 million this year.
In Kildare, it is said that 460 people are currently receiving this service every day.
The funding in Kildare South is €129,640.
The Minister stated that she intends to increase the funding for all services and that each service should see it this year.
